Choosing the Right Perch for Your Pet Bird- CLICK HERE!

A perch is an essential part of your bird’s cage and choosing a variety of perches is important for your bird’s health. Your bird should have perches of various sizes and materials in their cage for the comfort of your bird’s feet. It is tiring on the feet to stand on the same perch all day long.

1. The first step is to select a perch that is the correct diameter for your bird. Use the following guidelines for choosing a perch for your bird:
- ½ inch diameter for parakeets and parrotlets
- 5/8 inch diameter for cockatiels
- ¾ inch diameter for small conures
- 1 inch diameter for medium-sized parrots that includes Amazons, large conures, miniature macaws, small cockatoos, or African greys
- 2 inch diameter or larger for large macaws and cockatoos

2. Next choose a perch made of rope, a wooden perch, and a swing perch. You may also want to get a wooden ladder, which will allow your bird to get some exercise climbing up and down. For the cold, winter months or for cool air-conditioned rooms, use a heated perch, such as the Thermo-Perch Heated Bird Perch to help keep your bird warm. These perches will give your birds a variety of surfaces to stand on and offer relief to the foot muscles.

3. Install the perches at various heights in the cage and make sure that they are securely fastened to the cage.

If you notice that your bird is having any foot problems, contact your vet right away to have the feet examined. Taking care of your bird’s feet is essential to the health and well-being of your bird.
