National Dog Day - Tomorrow August 26, 2009- CLICK HERE!

National Dog Day is formally August 26, 2009 this year and our article is a day early to make sure that you are aware and can take a minute to honor the dog in your life.

What is National Dog Day?

National Dog Day is a day that you celebrate your beloved dogs and shed awareness on dogs that need to be rescued or those dogs that are homeless or abused. Historically, National Dog Day has always been August 26th.

National Dog Day was founded by author and pet expert Colleen Paige. She was ahead of her time in wanting to make sure that dogs are appreciated for everything they do. In addition to our own dogs giving us love and companionship and many times better health --she wanted us to appreciate dogs that put their lives on the line each and every day - such as guide dogs, bomb sniffing dogs, drug sniffing dogs and other dogs in public service.

Dogs need to be saved from homelessness and abuse. (Hey Mike... you reading up??)

The goal of the National Dog Day Foundation is to rescue 10,000 dogs a year. If you can adopt a dog, that helps them reach the goal. If you think owning a dog is too much to handle there are many other ways to contribute. You can help out by donating money or even donating dog supplies to a local shelter, rescue group or animal food bank.

If you cannot donate money or supplies because of the economy, you can volunteer for one day at those places.

National Dog Day has two goals:

to honor dogs, and
to rescue dogs from homelessness and abuse.

It's an opportunity for us to recognize and appreciate the value and importance of dogs in our lives.

President George W. Bush, a dog owner himself, sent a letter to the foundation in support of National Dog Day.

National Dog Day wishes to encourage dog ownership of all breeds, mixed and pure - and embraces the opportunity for all dogs to live a happy, safe and ”abuse-free life”.

We did a little bit of research on National Dog Day and found out that there is a discrepancy with respect to which day it really lands on. Some websites say that it is August 26th each year and some websites say that it is August 23rd each year.

National Dog Week is always the last week in September and that is undisputed :)

What should I do if I witness an animal being mistreated?

If you witness animal abuse or neglect, please contact your local humane society, animal shelter, or animal control agency immediately.

In most areas, those agencies have the authority to enforce state and local laws related to animals and the capability to investigate and resolve these situations. They rely on concerned citizens to be their eyes and ears in the community and to report animal suffering. You can choose to remain anonymous, although giving your name to your humane agency will enable that group to follow up with you when necessary.
