In online pets supplies retailing, a single picture—or image—isn’t nearly enough to sell the perfect dog toy or an effective odor and stain eliminator.

With detailed and custom pet products, shoppers want more detail and information. To give them more information, GregRobert (http://www.grpet.com/, http://www.shanestack.com/, http://www.rabbitmart.com/ and others), is rolling out an ambitious online video program that will place more than 200 product and educational videos on its 6 e-commerce sites.

On GRpet.com, which sells a variety of pet gear, customers can now click on product and educational videos that are approximately three minutes long. Currently a number of popular pet product manufacture videos are included such as Lambert Kay product videos, Abo Gear dog toy videos and Van Ness pet product videos.

In addition to explaining more about a particular product, such as how a dog toy is built or what applications a stain remover should be used for, the videos help GregRobert customers do a better job of getting information on selecting, measuring and ordering products. “Pet products are very complicated and video provides a better way to understand them,” says GregRobert CEO Ray Joyce. Within the next year, GregRobert, which operates niche pets supplies sites such as http://www.rachelsrobin.com/, BackyardStyle.com and ShanesTack.com, expects to have product and educational videos that showcase a part of its inventory of about 20,000 SKUs.

The online retailer uses some existing videos. For GRpet.com, GregRobert is working with Invodo to post educational videos on many products.

A recent webinar conducted by Forrester and Omniture focused on the benefits of online video. Dr. James McQuivey, VP and Lead Analyst at Forrester, communicated why and how online video attracts and engages:

According to McQuivey, a minute of video is worth 1.8 million words. Considering that 61% of American households have a broadband connection, the possibility of distributing and watching online videos now exists. In addition, there are 117 million online video watchers in the US who on average watch 56 minutes of online video per week.

The research and evidence are conclusive. Online video provides a website with a TV-esque experience and exposes the opportunity to attract, interest, and sell consumers.

The Excitement of this upcoming year is killing us!

We have so many new and exciting things planned for 2009 that we can't keep all the secrets inside anymore. The Pet industry is flourishing despite the slump in the US economy and we know why. We love our pets and when "push comes to shove" and something has to go --- the Starbucks will go before the things that we need to care for our beloved furry friends.

We have also seen the pet community symbolically hold hands and help each other through the ups and downs of the economy that occurred this past year. We are proud to be a part of this warm and loving industry that is really a community.
