Happy New Year......
For over 15 years, my husband and I have traveled out of town to visit relatives during the holidays. Every year we maintain the same same routine. We board our pets at the same place, leave on the same day, and come home at the same time. When we arrived home, I went to pick up our dog Harry from the kennel. The service was wonderful as usual, and Harry was happy to see us, as usual. But this year I noticed a difference when we got home. Harry Maybe it was because I didn't see him for 11 days. Maybe it was because I was so busy during the holiday rush that I didn't pay as much attention to my fuzzy friend. Or maybe it is because both Harry and I are 10 years older than we were when we started this gig. In any case, I felt the difference. And I was glad that I was able to recognize that I needed to be more aware, again, in the differences of taking care of older pets vs. middle age or younger dogs. As dogs mature, it's obvious that they will need more care. I'm glad that I started Harry on glucosamine supplements years ago. Every morning I give Harry a piece of my banana with the glucosamine pill stuck inside. He absolutely loves it and now he expects it! Dogs are smart and Harry is no exception. He knows when it's time for his daily supplement. I just grab a banana and he comes running. Or, if he's extra sleepy that day, I shake the bottle of glucosamine tablets and he comes running, with his ears on radar and his tail wagging. I am a firm believer that the glucosamine supplements have improved Harry's health and help to keep his hips and back legs limber. I did not give our previous dog, Suki, glucosamine supplements until after she was 10 years old. The larger breeds, such as Samoyeds, are prone to hip dysplasia and back leg problems. Suki began to have problems with hip dysplasia and she had to take a prescription med for the pain. I was not aware of the benefits of the glucosamine tablets until it was too late. Suki was already in pain and glucosamine will not stop pain. I learned the hard way. However, with a proper diet, exercise and early use of the supplement, Harry is doing great at age 10 1/2. He's been our largest Samoyed weighing in at 75 lbs. and he's very tall. Some people have mistaken him for a Great Pernese. Of course Harry gets a little ruffled when people mistake him for another breed, but he's very happy go lucky and just fluffs it off. He knows who he is. A great product to give your pet is the Excel TR Glucosamine for Dogs by EIGHT IN ONE PET PRODUCTS. The Excel TR Glucosamine supplement is for dogs to help with joint support. The Excel TR has the same effective ingredients as Excel Glucosamine but EXCEL TR features a time-release formula. This provides gradual release of glucosamine for a balanced supplement absorption to help maintain necessary joint lubrication. Excel TR Glucosamine contains vitamin C and MSM, a source of sulfur, which provides anti-inflammatory benefits. Always consult your veterinarian when adding any supplement to your pet's diet. Suggested dosage is: Dogs up to 25 lbs. - 1/2 tablet daily Dogs 26-50 lbs. - 1 tablet daily Dogs 51-75 lbs. - 1 1/2 tablets daily Dogs 75-100 lbs. - 2 tablets daily Dogs over 100 lbs. - 3 tablets daily .Active ingredients: 300 mg Glucosamine, 100 mg vitamin C and 25 mg MSM.
