New Years Resolution - Train your dog right from the start

Start training your puppy properly from the beginning.

While older dogs can be taught new tricks, what a puppy learns early on is learned quickly and easily.

The older the dog, the more the bad habits will need to be "un-learned". When it comes to raising and training a puppy, an ounce of problem prevention is certainly worth a pound of cure!

Train your dog gently and humanely, have fun and teach him using positive, motivational methods. Keep obedience sessions upbeat so that the training process is fun for your dog and you!

If training your dog is drudgery try the "playtraining" approach: incorporate games (such as "Go Find", "Hide 'n' Seek", retrieving, etc.) into your training sessions.

When giving your dog a command, avoid using a loud voice. Even if your dog is especially stubborn, your tone of voice when commanding "sit","down" or ""stay", should be calm and authoritative, rather than harsh or loud.

Keep anger in check. Never train your dog when you're feeling crabby or impatient. Earning your dog's respect cannot be accomplished by yelling, hitting, or handling your dog in a harsh manner. Moreover, studies have shown that fear and/or stress inhibits the learning process.

Although winter days may be shorter and colder, this shouldn’t prevent you and your pet from enjoying the outdoors. There are several popular wintertime options that also serve as dog-friendly or pet-friendly activities.

For many of us, winter is all about snow. While you spend time outdoors building a snowman or sledding with the family, don’t forget to invite your furry pal to come along and chase snowballs down the hill or fetch sticks and pine cones. If your dog loves to play fetch, take him snow diving and throw a ball in the fluffy snow for retrieval or take him for a sleigh ride – if your little ball of fur is used to being transported in a carrier, firmly attach the carrier to a sled and take your dog for ride!

If you enjoy cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, share your next winter trek with your pet. Research local areas that allow dogs on groomed trails and make sure your dog is under voice control or on a dog leash at all times. When there is snow on the ground, a dog may not be able to find the familiar scents and may become disoriented or lost if not kept track of or on a leash.
If you decide to take your pet on an outdoor excursion, remember that winters are bitter cold, snowy and wet and pets are not much different from humans when it comes to handling cold weather.

Don’t leave dogs outdoors for too long, no matter the temperature, wind-chill can threaten a pet’s health. Under such adverse conditions a number of additional considerations should be made. Unless precaution is taken, ice, salt, and sand can lead to paw abrasions and dogs with joint problems such as arthritis, especially older dogs, may be severely impacted by the cold.

As long as you keep these safety measures in mind, you will have a wonderful time with your pet.

When too many birds show up at your wild bird feeders

If too many birds at your bird feeder becomes a problem, you can control their numbers by putting out smaller amounts of seed, by using specialty seed, or by using restrictive feeders.

If you fill your feeder only when it’s empty, the birds will look for food elsewhere. They will return as long as you continue to fill it.

You can virtually eliminate visits by birds you’d rather not see by offering seeds they won’t eat. Be selective in your choice of seeds. If you use more than one type of seed, put them in separate feeders. This will reduce wasted seeds, as birds will toss unwanted seeds out of a feeder to get to their favorites.

Birds that visit your feeder have very specific preferences. Most prefer sunflower. Some prefer millet. A few prefer peanuts. Some seem to prefer the other grains used in the mixes: corn, milo, red millet, oats, wheat and canary seed. If you want to feed only cardinals, doves and white-throated sparrows, switch from black oil sunflower to safflower.

If you want only finches and an occasional dove and white-throated sparrow, try nyjer (thistle) seed. If you only want jays, titmice and white-throated sparrows try peanuts.

Another way to discourage unwanted birds is to use specialty feeders that for the most part, allow only “select” birds to feed. The most non-selective feeders are the tray, platform bird feeders or house feeders. You can encourage small birds with feeders that restrict access. Wood feeders with vertical bars and feeders covered with wire mesh frustrate the larger birds. Tube feeders without trays also restrict access to small birds. Remove the perches, and you’ve further selected only those birds capable of clinging—finches, chickadees, titmice and woodpeckers.

Add vertical perches to tub thistle feeders, and you’ll limit accessibility primarily to the goldfinches. If starlings are a problem at your suet feeder, you can discourage them by using a suet feeder with access only at the bottom. Starlings are reluctant to perch upside down. Chickadees and woodpeckers don’t find that a problem.

Administering Medication or Supplements to your Dog

HELPFUL INFORMATION FOR GIVING LIQUID MEDICATION TO YOUR DOG

The simplest way to give your dog or puppy a liquid supplement or medication is to mix it with canned food and serve it at dinner time. To make sure that your dog swallows the medication in it's entirety, it is best to give a small amount of food that the dog is certain to eat rather versus a larger amount of food that your dog may not complete.

Occasionally we hear about a stubborn dog that may be unwilling to eat the food ; and then there are elderly dogs or ill dogs that may have dietary restrictions that prevent putting the medication in food. If this is the case, you will need to administer the medication directly into your dog’s mouth.

Transport your dog in a safe and comfortable area where the dog can be handled easily. Have the medication "Ready To Go". It is easier to give liquid medication to a canine if you have an assistant - a second person available to help you.

As with any medication, make sure you have carefully read the label and understand the the dose to administer.

Pull your dog’s lip away from his teeth and create a “pouch” along the side of the mouth in a gentle manner

Place the tip of the syringe in the side of the dog's mouth, just behind one of the canine teeth. Move the syringe so that it is in the mouth just past the tooth line.

Slowly squeeze the syringe to dispense the liquid supplement or medication. Make sure you do this slowly ( your dog needs time to swallow the liquid while breathing normally.)
Almost all dogs will spit out some of the liquid. DO NOT administer more unless you are certain that NONE of the medication was taken.

Make sure you provide positive reinforcement, petting your dog and giving your dog plenty of praise during the entire time. Give your dog a special treat after giving the medication.
Wash the dropper or syringe thoroughly with water.

Stop Your Cat from Scratching on Your Furniture

All cats have the natural instinct to scratch their nails and this habit can be very frustrating for a variety of cat owners. If your cat has the tendency to scratch on your furniture or your wood trim in your house, it is a good idea to set-up scratching stations around your house to keep your cat from distroying your house. A scratching station can consist of any type of scratching post or pad that your cat likes. Keep the scratching station infused with catnip everyday to encourage good scratching behavior.

One of my favorite scratching posts is the Super Catnip Cat Scratcher House. This fun little house is designed to attract your cat and keep your cat entertained for hours. It is easy to put together and once it is assembled, your cat won't be able to resist going inside and scratching the fun floor pads. Another favorite scratching post of mine is the Carpeted Scratch Post by Doskocil. Any cat who loves to scratch the carpet or furniture will love to sink his claws into this soft post. It also keeps your cat scratching longer when you sprinkle some catnip on top.

If your cat likes to claw up your door frames, you may also want to consider hanging a cat scratcher on a door knob to get him interested in something else. Your cat will be attracted to the mouse sounds this scratcher makes and will have fun scratching the surface of the scratcher pad.

At first, you may want to offer your cat a variety of surfaces to scratch on in order to find the surface that your cat likes the best. Your typical walk around the block can be lacking in the cardio department, especially if your dog enjoys sniffing every mailbox or stopping at every pole. National Dog Day is formally August 26, 2009 this year and our article is a day early to make sure that you are aware and can take a minute to honor the dog in your life.

What is National Dog Day?

National Dog Day is a day that you celebrate your beloved dogs and shed awareness on dogs that need to be rescued or those dogs that are homeless or abused. Historically, National Dog Day has always been August 26th.

National Dog Day was founded by author and pet expert Colleen Paige. She was ahead of her time in wanting to make sure that dogs are appreciated for everything they do. In addition to our own dogs giving us love and companionship and many times better health --she wanted us to appreciate dogs that put their lives on the line each and every day - such as guide dogs, bomb sniffing dogs, drug sniffing dogs and other dogs in public service.

Dogs need to be saved from homelessness and abuse. (Hey Mike... you reading up??)

The goal of the National Dog Day Foundation is to rescue 10,000 dogs a year. If you can adopt a dog, that helps them reach the goal. If you think owning a dog is too much to handle there are many other ways to contribute. You can help out by donating money or even donating dog supplies to a local shelter, rescue group or animal food bank.

If you cannot donate money or supplies because of the economy, you can volunteer for one day at those places.

Choosing the Right Perch for Your Pet Bird

A perch is an essential part of your bird’s cage and choosing a variety of perches is important for your bird’s health. Your bird should have perches of various sizes and materials in their cage for the comfort of your bird’s feet. It is tiring on the feet to stand on the same perch all day long.

1. The first step is to select a perch that is the correct diameter for your bird. Use the following guidelines for choosing a perch for your bird:
- ½ inch diameter for parakeets and parrotlets
- 5/8 inch diameter for cockatiels
- ¾ inch diameter for small conures
- 1 inch diameter for medium-sized parrots that includes Amazons, large conures, miniature macaws, small cockatoos, or African greys
- 2 inch diameter or larger for large macaws and cockatoos

G-Force - Can Guinea Pigs be Great Family Pets?

G-Force, the movie about "secret agent guinea pigs", opened late last month to strong box office numbers. 55% of the moviegoers were in the under 18 crowd. (I'd have to guess that the other 45% were parents accompanying the minors.)

Like "Finding Nemo" all the excitement around this movie will get children begging thier parents for a pet guinea pig. Do these fun, furry creatures make good pets?

Guinea pigs can be loving family pets.
They are sociable and can be played with outside their cage or home. As with any pet, they require a certain amount of care. Guinea pig lifespan is about eight years.

Some things you need to know about Guinea Pigs before your decision

Guinea pigs thrive in a consistent environment and routine. Feed them the same time each day. Play time should be consistent also.
A Guinea pigs front teeth grow all the time (non-stop). Make sure they always have a chew stick.
The high-pitched squeaking noise they make is normal. It’s thier means of communication.

A Guinea Pigs Diet should consist of:

High-quality guinea pig food; timothy hay, fresh vegetables, and fruits

Cleaning up cat urine on your floor or furniture can be a difficult task, so preventing your cat from urinating outside of the litter box is best. Cats will urinate outside of the litter box when they are misbehaving or acting out as a result of stress. Cats also like to have a clean litter box when they go to the bathroom. Make accidents less appealing by following these helpful tips:

- A clean litter box is essential. Make sure your litter box is thoroughly cleaned out at least once a week. Completely change out the litter and wash the box in warm water. Litter box liners are great for an easy clean-up and come in a variety of sizes and scents to meet your needs. Ear Care for Your Cat

Have you ever considered that the reason why your pets don't listen might be because you haven't cleaned their ears? Although the former is not correct rational, checking and cleaning your cat's ears does insure they are in good health. Cats can develop painful ear infections or ear mites, so a brief inspection can spare your cat a lot of pain.

Most of the time, your cat's ears should not need any cleaning, especially if you own multiple cats. (Cats will clean one an other's ears) If you do notice any redness, discharge, or excessive goo, its time to clean your cat's ears. Hold your cat on your lap. Squirt a medicated ear-cleaning solution into the ear canal. Massage the base of the ear to loosen debris, and use a cotton swap to gently rub the visible portion of the ear.

Ear mites are tiny parasites that suck lymph from the inner ear. Cats often scratch at them with no success and produce a black/brown material from the ear. To get rid of ear mites you will need a specific medication such as Four Paws Ear Mite Remedy for Cats. Also, be sure to check all your pets with the veterinarian if one has mites; mites spread easily.

Choosing the Right Cage for Your Pet Bird

When purchasing a cage for your pet bird, it is best to buy the biggest cage that you can. Birds need a lot of room to stretch and move around the cage, in addition for a place to keep toys, water and food bowls, perches, and more. The cage should be no less than two times the width and three times the height of your bird’s wing span. Here are some things to consider when purchasing a cage:

- Make sure that the cage is made to be strong and durable. Since birds like to chew the cage, you will want to look for one that has a durable finish and strong, durable bars that are appropriate for the type of bird that you have.
