A few tips for teaching to lap:

• Start each feeding with a session where you dip your fingers into the shallow dish and let the animal lick your finger.
• Repeat this several times, each time making the animal lean closer to the dish.
• Every animal is different, but it shouldn’t take long for the animal to get the idea.
• Finish the feeding session with a bottle depending on the amount lapped from the bowl.
• Don’t push the animal’s nose into the dish. It might inhale the liquid into its lungs, which can lead to pneumonia and only stresses the animal, making your task all the more difficult.
• Be patient.

These are the days of the year when rainfall is at its lowest levels.

But both GregRobert and The Old Farmer’s Almanac can agree that the Dog Days are traditionally very hot and when it’s hot, special precautions should be introduced to ensure the safety of your pet while he is outside or even while he is inside and you are away at work.

If your dog or cat is a stay-at-home pet while you work – it’s important that you don’t shut your air conditioner off during the day while you are gone.  Make sure that it is not in need of maintenance or parts.

They must become used to a new house and neighborhood, unfamiliar sounds strange postal carriers and other service people, water that does not agree with them, and a colder or warmer climate.

Once accustomed to the changes, the pet will settle down and be content.

It is advisable to keep the pet confined until it realizes that this is the new home and that the family is going to stay, or it may wander off and try to return to the old home. This is especially true of cats, and they should be confined for several weeks.

To speed that “at home” feeling, use the pet’s familiar food and water dishes, bed, blanket, toys, and so forth. Try to put them in the same sort of location as they were in the old home water dish by the back door, food dish in a particular spot in the kitchen, and so forth.
