10 Million People Allergic to Cats- CLICK HERE!

Talk to a cat owner and you will realize that cats are loved more than imaginable. Cat owners can be obsessive and allergies will not stand in the way!

More than 50% of all households in the United States own cats and dogs. Unfortunately, cat allergies are one of the common forms of allergies. Statistics have shown that over 10 million people in the U.S. alone have allergic reactions to cats - especially their fur.

The biggest cause of cat allergies is dander. The dander is dust that is produced by the body of the cat. Dander is basically shed skin that comes off of cats, normally in the form of small flakes. Although dander can annoy your skin, it can also get into your immune system as well, resulting in a variety of symptoms and almost immediate allergic reactions.

The dander, once in the immune system, is perceived to be a threat. Even though it isn’t classified as a disease, it’s more of a reflex by your body and your immune system. Cat allergies occur quite often due to cats having allergens that are spread throughout their blood, urine, and saliva. Although a cat may not be present at the time, the excretions probably still are. Elimination of shedding can sometimes reduce the severity of allergens in your home.

Cat dander, urine, and saliva, are found throughout the home of cat owners. Cats always groom themselves, which involves rubbing their saliva into their fur. When they do this, they spread their dander and allergens around. Although you may try to avoid, but there is really nothing that you can do about it.
Cats have a natural instinct to groom or bathe themselves, no matter how many baths you give them, you simply won’t stop them from grooming.

Normally, when someone is taking an allergic reaction to cats, he or she will wheeze, cough, sneeze, itch, have watery eyes, or a difficult time in breathing. Different people react different ways to cat allergens, meaning that some symptoms may not occur at all. Fever and chills is very rare, although it can happen. If someone who has cat allergies comes down with fever and chills, you should contact a doctor immediately. Chances are, it isn’t an allergic reaction to cats, but instead another type of disease that a doctor will need to identify.

Cat allergies are normally treated with antihistamines and decongestants. Those that experience asthma attacks or other forms of allergies, normally take antihistamines. Decongestants on the other hand, are normally used to cure coughs and swollen nasal passages. Sometimes, doctors will recommend allergy shots as well.

Allergy shots can help to prevent the attack, especially if someone is very allergic to cats. They are a good form of treatment and prevention, and they can also help to decrease the risk of allergies affecting the individual.

Cats are great animals to own - although cat allergies are something we could all live without.

Caring for Older Pets in the New Year- CLICK HERE!

Happy New Year......

For over 15 years, my husband and I have traveled out of town to visit relatives during the holidays. Every year we maintain the same same routine. We board our pets at the same place, leave on the same day, and come home at the same time.

When we arrived home, I went to pick up our dog Harry from the kennel. The service was wonderful as usual, and Harry was happy to see us, as usual. But this year I noticed a difference when we got home. Harry seemed to be older.

Maybe it was because I didn't see him for 11 days. Maybe it was because I was so busy during the holiday rush that I didn't pay as much attention to my fuzzy friend. Or maybe it is because both Harry and I are 10 years older than we were when we started this gig.

In any case, I felt the difference. And I was glad that I was able to recognize that I needed to be more aware, again, in the differences of taking care of older pets vs. middle age or younger dogs.

As dogs mature, it's obvious that they will need more care. I'm glad that I started Harry on glucosamine supplements years ago. Every morning I give Harry a piece of my banana with the glucosamine pill stuck inside. He absolutely loves it and now he expects it!

Dogs are smart and Harry is no exception. He knows when it's time for his daily supplement. I just grab a banana and he comes running. Or, if he's extra sleepy that day, I shake the bottle of glucosamine tablets and he comes running, with his ears on radar and his tail wagging.

I am a firm believer that the glucosamine supplements have improved Harry's health and help to keep his hips and back legs limber. I did not give our previous dog, Suki, glucosamine supplements until after she was 10 years old. The larger breeds, such as Samoyeds, are prone to hip dysplasia and back leg problems. Suki began to have problems with hip dysplasia and she had to take a prescription med for the pain. I was not aware of the benefits of the glucosamine tablets until it was too late. Suki was already in pain and glucosamine will not stop pain. I learned the hard way.

However, with a proper diet, exercise and early use of the supplement, Harry is doing great at age 10 1/2. He's been our largest Samoyed weighing in at 75 lbs. and he's very tall. Some people have mistaken him for a Great Pernese. Of course Harry gets a little ruffled when people mistake him for another breed, but he's very happy go lucky and just fluffs it off. He knows who he is.

A great product to give your pet is the Excel TR Glucosamine for Dogs by EIGHT IN ONE PET PRODUCTS. The Excel TR Glucosamine supplement is for dogs to help with joint support. The Excel TR has the same effective ingredients as Excel Glucosamine but EXCEL TR features a time-release formula. This provides gradual release of glucosamine for a balanced supplement absorption to help maintain necessary joint lubrication.

Excel TR Glucosamine contains vitamin C and MSM, a source of sulfur, which provides anti-inflammatory benefits. Always consult your veterinarian when adding any supplement to your pet's diet.

Suggested dosage is: Dogs up to 25 lbs. - 1/2 tablet daily Dogs 26-50 lbs. - 1 tablet daily Dogs 51-75 lbs. - 1 1/2 tablets daily Dogs 75-100 lbs. - 2 tablets daily Dogs over 100 lbs. - 3 tablets daily .Active ingredients: 300 mg Glucosamine, 100 mg vitamin C and 25 mg MSM.
