Dog Paw Care During the Winter Months- CLICK HERE!

The first substantial snowfall of winter took place here in Michigan today. Somewhat early as far as snow falls go. I could see the neighborhood children outside all bundled up and starting to throw snowballs at each other.
I also was able to see all the neighborhood dogs go running outside with their families, rolling and jumping in the snow, chasing the children as they ran away from the flying snowballs.

As I remember from when my kids were younger, they undoubtedly came inside with chapped lips and faces donning beautiful smiles.

A little bit of Desitin and Chapstick and they were on their way to healing and another play day outside tomorrow. Take note of the poor puppy, though. His pads are completely exposed to the snow and they take a major beating in the cold weather. Paw care is a top priority in winter especially in colder climates where there is ice, snow or freezing weather.

Not only does the cold air and weather cause havoc on a dogs paws, but Rock salt and chemical de-icers are very irritating to pads as well. Salt and de-icers on sidewalks or paths that your dog may walk on, will cause very sore pads, infection and even blistering in some cases.

Not only are the chemicals harmful to paws, but they can be toxic causing intestinal discomfort if ingested. Use pet-friendly deicing salt like Qik Joe Ice Melter on your own driveway and sidewalks.

If your dog does not wear dog booties, wash his paws when he gets back in the house. Dip the entire paw into a bowl of warm water. This washes away any residue and eliminates the possibility for your dog to lick the salt off later. Clean out between the toes and apply Protecta-Pad or Pad Heal on the foot pads. This will help to prevent chapping, cracking, and soreness. Make sure to apply the ointment again before your dog goes back outside.
Be sure to keep your dogs nails trimmed, because long paw nails actually cause the toes on your dog to separate, allowing ice and salt to become trapped between them.
