Chinchillas are a small rodent that are becoming increasingly more popular as pets in the United States. They are native to South America and can be found in the wild in rocky, arid areas in the mountains. They have beautiful fur that is soft and extremely thick. This fur protects them in the wild from the elements, but in your home a chinchilla can get too hot and overheat.

Chinchilla's prefer cooler, quiet areas in a home. The basement is sometimes the best location for your pet chinchilla, as long as it is frequented often. Chinchilla's need socialization and daily care.

Wheels can provide your pet chinchilla with an excellent means of exercising - but make sure that your chinchilla also has time outside of his cage, especially if his cage is not too large. Make sure that you introduce a exercise wheel to your chinchilla at a young age. We have heard about chinchilla's that do not take to an exercise wheel if introduced later in life.

The larger the cage that you can afford to purchase your chinchilla, the better. Make sure that your chinchilla has at least a 18 by 18 inch floor space. A tall chinchilla cage is best. We like this cage: Medium Clean Living Cage for Chinchillas the best.

It is a tall cage and has shelves and ladders that allow the chinchilla to climb. Wire is the best cage material. Avoid plastic cages or accessories because chinchillas chew and destroy plastic pretty easily.
